"Astrolux"
This design started as an afterthought to a lyrical hand lettering project. I’ve been a fan of Strung Out for a long time and this atomic-type symbol is shows up on the band’s albums, shirts, and even on the skin of their fans.
The first treatment is a radial-type design that's inspired by the "solar" in "Solarity". The alignment of the circles is meant to represent the order and organization that the software provides.
The design is composed of simple ellipses rotated and staggered around a central point. This logo works well with a gradient color, or as a black and white design. The final design can be a logo mark on its own or it can be incorporated to the name “Solarity” itself.
I wanted to create a secondary design that complimented the lettering design, and their original design needed to be there. I challenged myself to recreate this iconic symbol.
The symbol is relatively simple and can be recreated pretty closely with some aligned ellipses for the orbit lines and the “electrons”. Getting the sleek styling of the orbit lines required a very keen attention to detail. The electrons were easy by comparison.
To achieve the depth of the design where the orbit lines go behind the “nucleus” and how the lines are interwoven, the existing ring shapes were split in half which allows the appearance of depth.
After solving for the depth of the design and arranging the layers, I feel that the final design is a very close interpretation of the original.
